Management or Under-Management
Senior Business Consultant / Trainer Management in Cyprus is mostly exercised by a “Manager” who is:
- Family member in a Family business
- Good technocrat / technician eg. Accountants, Engineers, Lawyers, Doctors, Chefs, etc
- Promoted without meeting the criteria predominantly on the basis of years of experience (eg Banks, Government)
That is why most Organizations are under – managed.
In the past, this fact did not have any serious consequences on the Organizational effectiveness due to the fact that the Cyprus market was characterized by a closed economy and weak competition from outside.
Things have changed! Especially now, while the economy is in recession, Management is badly in need.
Management, like any other profession, is a science that needs to be mastered through proper education as well as experience like medicine, law, engineering, accounting etc.
A good builder does not make a good Supervisor, a good accountant does not make a good Financial Manager and so on.
A Manager needs to study Management regardless of other skills, full stop!
I was told many times by Managers that they have acquired experience over time.
Certainly experience is important when is acquired on the ground of knowledge.
Furthermore, Management like all professions, change in time, so Managers need to create the framework for continuous development. Keep in mind that as a Manager you are assessed on the results of the people you Manage, therefore, management style as well as practices need to be adjusted accordingly and on the basis of the effect on managed people.
